I still have emails from my account that were inquiries, sumbissions, etc, to the leavinghope site. Mostly, they were emails with nine inch nails interpretations that I never got around to reading fully and/or approving for posting. In a web 2.0 era, a user could have typed their submission out on the page itself, then all I would have to do was click one button to “approve.”
The majority of correspondences were filled with brief intros/greetings and anecdotes about nin, couped with their song interpretation. A few had legitimate questions about how I determined what interpretations made the cut.
Another specifically wondered if my site was a part of my college thesis (no, it wasn’t, Rachael.)
There was also a brief chain of emails between a local SD goth girl who I was madly obsessed with–sad! Yet the majority of my friends from the club and coffee shops of that era were, too, mind you–she was that illusive gothic unicorn, and when cornered to adhere to timetables, social norms and mores, etc, she usually vanished before she was pinned to comment publicly.
When one or more of use did manage to get her to meet up, it was usually drunken chaos. Probably all the better nothing ever transpired further than that blissfull, freeformed, fucked up fun we had.
In life, a lot of things go unsaid, unfinished, unacknowledged. Those emails I’ll never answer. This site, less than 1% of those that know me or have been to the old site will never find this one. But if you are reading this and we know each other IRL or in the wired and have been a part of my life in some fashion positively or negatively, I’d like to thank you all despite our differences; it’s in these dissimilarities that make life unique and interesting. It’s been a fun ride, and I hope to continue on as long as my time on this speck of a speck of a speck of existence persists unabaded.
